• Welcome

Welcome to Daily Life Photography’s blog site! I’m Jen, and I use my camera to catch memories and tell stories that make meaningful portraits and works of art. I'd love to tell your story! Together we can make your life a work of art that keeps your story going for generations.

I am a photographer, but I want to do more than create your portrait. I want to get to know you, your family, your spouse, or your best friend before I get out the camera. I want to tell your story at this moment in your life. Where do you live? What do you do? Whom do you love? Together you and I can create something that no one else can do. Sounds fun, doesn’t it?!

Central Iowa Beloved Photographer

I’d like to introduce my first guest blog post by Shelly Colvin of Shelly Colvin Photography.  You might remember seeing her parents’ very special and meant to be Beloved session in January.  This spring, Shelly and her husband Mike had their own Beloved session, and Shelly has this to say about it.

I had first heard about Beloved almost a year ago through another photographer–somehow, I tucked it away in my mind that I thought it was interesting but never did much more with the idea.  It was when we were hit with the bad news about my dad’s cancer that I knew I wanted to give my parents the gift of a Beloved session.  Seeing their experience and the emotions that came from the session, I knew that I wanted to experience this with my husband.

I love images that tell a story–not the ones where you can see the tense, posed “look-here-and-smile” pictures.  I love how Beloved somehow captures the love between people–definitely unlike any other pictures I’ve looked at.  I wanted to have a great time with my husband and have images that captured us at this stage in our lives.

I knew that our Beloved session would be unlike any other session I’ve been a part of.  I really went into it trusting Jen and knowing that she would do and awesome job, and all Mike and I had to do was to relax and have fun!  It was simply a time for my husband and I to connect and for that connection to be captured in pictures.

Beforehand, my husband questioned, “Do we really need to do this?”  But he knew this was my thing and that I wanted this experience .  He was a great sport and went along with it without a lot of questions asked.  Part of my surprise from our Beloved session was how emotional Mike was.  I know he may have a softer side than myself, but it still shocked me how he showed this during our session.  The tears and laughter throughout our session really told me how he felt!  I was most surprised  at how natural our smiles and laughs were.  Beloved really allowed for our true selves to shine.

There were so many things we loved about our Beloved session–the relaxing ease of having our pictures taken.  The invites and questions asked really made us think about US and not about having our pictures taken.  We don’t do many date nights since having our son two and a half years ago, so it was really great spending one on one time with Mike.

I really think everyone should have images like these to capture their love for a lifetime.  Life’s too short and so many things can hapen.  I am so thankful to have taken the time to stop and smell the roses during our busy lives.

We love our final products  We feel like they are an intimate part of us and plan on really showcasing them in our bedroom.  Beyond that, I would love to see our album passed generations down as I know I would definitely cherish an album of my grandparents like this!  Everyone who has seen our products and images loves them.  In fact, one of the funnier comments I got was that “they are like the pictures of couples that come in picture frames–you know, the ones you are supposed to take out and replace with your own pictures”!!

Wow.  Thanks Shelly.

Capella Salon
Who doesn’t love to be spoiled?  For a perfect, luxurious experience in being pampered and walking out the door feeling good and looking great, visit Capella Salon, the newest featured business on Local Business Love.  You can find Cindy Wiederien and her team of awesome stylists at 2211 NW 111th Street in Clive.  Be sure to look for the free offer at the end of this post!

Capella began as a idea for Cindy while working at another metro area salon.  She wanted a place of her own for the freedom to create and grow that she just couldn’t find by working for another salon.  She immediately began planning and researching.  Cindy and her business partner Rachel Olsen began Capella Salon two and a half years ago.

Capella Salon
Capella’s name is unique and is derived from the Italian word capelli meaning hair.  Capella is also the brightest star in the constellation Auriga, which is perfect because clients feel like a star when they visit Capella. When clients visit Capella, they’re greeted at the door, offered a beverage, and rarely have to wait more than a minute or two before they’re in the chair and receiving a wonderful, relaxing neck and shoulder massage.  No matter who styles a client’s hair, he or she is going to have a stylist with a great education and at least 10 year of experience.  The stylist will discuss the client’s vision and make it a reality using organic products and a deft touch.

Capella Salon

Cindy has always been interested in beauty.  “If you ask my mom, she’ll tell you I was always destined to be a stylist.  I always played with my sister’s hair and with Barbies, giving them haircuts,” Cindy says.

Cindy loves working with people.  She’s amazed by the power she and her stylists have to make people feel good by making them look good.  Cindy recalls a recent client who was a very young stroke victim.  About seven weeks after her stroke, the client’s mother-in-law called and told Cindy that “all Kate wanted was a haircut.”  For Cindy, being able to go and give her that gift is one of the most rewarding aspects of her job.  “It’s inspiring to empower people to feel good about themselves.”

Cindy likes working with her team of stylists, too.  One of her priorities is to continue to be well-educated and have the opportunity to create and innovate.  She and her team are experienced stylists that continue to share educational experiences and grow with the industry. Five of the six stylists at Capella all have over 10 years of experience.  There aren’t many salons locally where the staff is so knowledgeable.  Cindy is proud that her experienced stylists have the skill and leadership to welcome and encourage new stylists in the industry–one of which has just joined the Capella team.  And they share that knowledge with their clients.  In fact, some misconceptions that clients have are that unwashed hair is better for an upstyle.  The stylists have all the products and tools needed to make sure the style stays in place for the day, and any oil on the hair will keep it from being shiny.  Clean hair is always best before any coloring or highlighting is done, too.  Salt from sweat will affect how the hair takes the color.  In fact, your hair care products should be sulfate-free, and you can also find those at Capella.  Something else Cindy would love to let people know is that salons are great for guys, as well.  Capella has a great line of men’s hair care products and about 25% of their clientele is male.

Capella Salon

One of Cindy’s proudest moments came recently when a photo shoot with models styled by the salon and dressed by Blond Genius was published by Modern Salon.  She’s also honored when current clients refer their friends to the salon.

Capella Salon

Capella is a fabulous, modern, upscale salon whose services focus on hair care and styling.  Clients can get a basic haircut, hair conditioning treatments, a formaldahyde-free hair straightening system, organic facial waxing, coloring, perms, blow-outs and upstyles.  They also work with two freelance make-up artists for clients who want complete styling for special occasions or weddings.

My Adventures in Film ~ April 2012 | Central Iowa Lifestyle & Portrait Photographer

I bought another film camera!  Eeeek!  Actually, it was a really good deal.  I found a Nikon F100 with a battery grip on Ebay for $225.  Basically, it’s the film version of my D700.  And I love it!  I still love my Nikon FM, but for different reasons.  The F100 has autofocus (only 5 focus points–bummer) and auto film load and advance.  I’ve pretty much decided that all of my personal images from now on are going to be shot on film, so having a camera that I can operate faster is pretty helpful when photographing two active boys.

I still shot a lot on my FM this month, and I choose it when I’m in to mood to really make a photograph.  I didn’t get a chance to take my film camera and my digital camera on their double date.  Maybe we’ll get to that in May.

I tried a couple of new films, too.  I’m still pretty in love with Kodak Portra 400, but I also liked the Fuji 400h.

So here’s a bit of my own daily life on film for April.

Spring is so early this year!  Crabapples and lilacs bloomed the first week of April.

For my Photo a Day in April, I had to photograph a sunset one day.  I took my film camera along and got a few shots with it, too.

We always have a mini Easter egg hunt in our back yard for Easter.  I’m so glad Will hasn’t outgrown it yet.  After gathering their basket of eggs, Will and Henry “hatched” them all to find their treasures.  They each had a golden egg with a special treat.

Easter afternoon found us at the farm, and Will spent the afternoon at the pond fishing.

I love photographing my garden.  I do it every spring, and every spring I’m amazed by its beauty.  Expect lots more garden photos on film. :)

I spent the last Saturday in April playing tourist in my hometown.  I haven’t done that in years.  It was fun to look at the skyline I see everyday through my lens.

Miscellaneous:  Henry reading to Stripey in bed.

Mitch’s construction project and Henry’s construction project.

Will becoming obsessed with The Hunger Games.  I’ve got to find time to read that!

I’ve already gone through over two rolls of film so far in May.  It’s field trip season!

What’s keeping you from shooting a roll of film?

April Photo A Day | Central Iowa Lifestyle & Portrait Photographer

I really wanted to do a 366 project this year.  In fact, I started one.  It lasted two, maybe three days.  Then in February I discovered the Photo a Day project by Chantelle otherwise known as Fat Mum Slim.  It was midway through the month when I made this discovery, and so my perfectionistic, organized nature told me that I couldn’t just jump in halfway through.  March rolled around, and I forgot all about it.  Then I stumbled upon the April challenge one night surfing evil, time-sucking Pinterest on my phone in bed.  It was April 1.  I decided on a whim to do it, and I took my first picture right there in bed.  The assignment for the day was “Your reflection.”  I took a picture of my phone reflecting in my glasses, and I was off!

This project has been wonderful for me in many ways.  It gave me an assignment every day.  And being the good student that I am, I did it every day.  I always tagged my images #photoadayapril, but I rarely checked what anyone else did.  I did this on purpose.  I wanted to be myself.  I wanted to challenge my own creativity.  I didn’t want to be influenced by what others were doing.  And I didn’t want to feel inadequate when I wasn’t as clever as other people.

This project got me thinking.  It made me be more creative.  It made me want to take pictures just for fun!  I rarely went out of my way to create an image for the daily assignment, but if I did, I made sure that it wasn’t a chore, that it added to my day or was enjoyable.  Some days, I knew right away what I wanted my image to be.  Other days, my image sneaked up on me.  And on the more challenging days, I had to go looking for my image.  But no matter how I got my image, I always felt a sense of accomplishment, and I always had fun.  Who knew that my little life could be so interesting?!
